Why Care for Baby Teeth?

Even though primary teeth will eventually fall out, their health will reflect on your child's long-term oral health. Those tiny pearly whites play a significant role in speech development and help your child chew comfortably. They also hold the space needed for the adult teeth guiding them to come in the correct positions.

Losing a baby tooth too early can result in the neighboring teeth moving toward the gap, leading to crooked teeth, which would likely require future orthodontic treatment. Caring for your child's baby teeth and ensuring they are cavity-free will set the stage for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

What Are Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are restorations we use to repair cavities. At My Kids Dental Center, we offer composite resin fillings that match the color of your child's natural teeth, making them undetectable. Our tooth-colored fillings restore your child's teeth to their normal function and appearance.

What Are Symptoms of Tooth Decay?

Symptoms of cavities requiring dental fillings include toothaches, pain when biting or chewing, and sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. You may also notice white or brown spots on your little one's tooth enamel. If you see any of these symptoms, it's best to have your child come in for an evaluation so Dr. Cargill can make sure everything looks good and proceed with treatment if needed.

What Happens if Your Child Doesn't Get a Cavity Filled?

Untreated tooth decay will not heal on its own. The condition will progressively worsen, potentially affecting the innermost portion of the tooth called the pulp. At that point, Dr. Cargill may recommend a dental crown, nerve treatment, or even an extraction. Treating a cavity with a dental filling will prevent complications and extensive treatments down the road.

What Is the Dental Filling Process?

Dr. Cargill will administer a local anesthetic to numb the area. She will remove the decayed or damaged portions of the tooth and place a composite filling closely matched to your child's surrounding teeth. Next, she will smooth and polish the restoration and make any adjustments needed.
