What Is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a game-changer when it comes to providing safe and comfortable pediatric dental care. It involves the use of sedatives, or calming medications, to help your child relax while receiving the needed dental care. Sedation takes the edge off dental visits and vastly reduces the risk of injury during treatment.
Is Your Child a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry
Sedation dentistry is indicated for highly anxious children, kids with an extreme gag reflex, young patients who are unable to stay still during dental procedures, and children requiring exceptionally lengthy or complex treatments. It is particularly beneficial to children with special behavioral or medical needs, preventing spontaneous movement, guiding cooperative behavior, and providing safe and stress-free dental care.
Nitrous Oxide Sedation - An Overview
Nitrous oxide, also known as "laughing gas," is the most commonly used type of sedation. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry considers this form of conscious sedation safe for children during dental treatment.
Your child will inhale a mixture of nitrous oxide gas and oxygen through a mask. The calming effect should take effect in about five minutes. Dr. Cargill and her team will control the dosage and amount of nitrous oxide gas administered to your child to maintain optimal levels of sedation throughout the dental procedure. Your child will be awake and responsive during treatment but will be calm and relaxed.
Once the treatment is completed, we will turn off the nitrous oxide and have your child breathe in pure oxygen for a few minutes. The best thing about laughing gas is that its effects wear off right away, allowing your child to resume everyday activities without downtime.
Is Sedation Dentistry Safe?
Nitrous oxide sedation has been shown to be highly safe and effective when administered by an experienced provider. At My Kids Dental Center, we take your child's safety seriously and follow every recommended safety protocol to provide the highest quality of care.
